Media and Body Image

Media is a large part of our culture and that shapes how we are as a society. Whether it be from television, magazines, social media, or advertisements they all contain messages that are aimed at a certain age group and a powerful push towards what is "right" or "expected" in our society. Growing up, it is common to face difficulty in determining who you are and what you stand for. This is why I believe that most media is projected towards teenagers. One of the most widely faced struggles, I believe, is to be exactly like celebrities. The constant stress to be "fit" and "beautiful/handsome" to fit in is a terrible concept that celebrities give off. Being "fit" and "beautiful/handsome" does not require, for girls, to be skin and bone, tall, or wear makeup. For guys, to be handsome does not require you to be muscular, tan, or athletic. This video shows what our society is facing.

This video is very disturbing and sadly reflects on this day and age. In my opinion, we are all individuals and we are meant to be different. If we were meant to all be the same then we would be, but we are not. Being able to express your unique personality, being healthy, and having fun is really what makes you beautiful. By starving yourself and finding that need to fit in results in lack of energy, constant thought of food, and less motivation to take part in activities that you love. Teenagers need to have a childhood where they will remember fun memories, not starved ones.  We all need to live life in whichever way it makes ourselves happy!

  1. I think this is a video that everyone should watch. This is a great topic because so many people around us everyday are struggling with something in their lives and unfortunately a lot of young girls are unhappy with themselves. I agree that people strive to be like celebrities but in reality they are fixed with photoshop and makeup. You did a great job explaining this video and stating that we are all different and shouldn't be like everyone else!

  2. I agree that body image is a huge social issue in the United States today. It really sad that people think that they should be tall and model thin. Being model thin is not always a good thing, often it is unhealthy. Both children and adults need to learn the difference between being super thin and being the correct weight for you!, fit and healthy. This post reminds me of Aerie's new campaign. They are using non- super models and are not photoshopping them. I think this is a great step to showing America's girls that it is okay to have scare, not me model thin, not have perfect makeup etc.

  3. I agree that body image is a huge problem in our current society. Girls are expected to be perfect models and guys are expected to be ripped and strong. Media and marketing has shaped our image of how we should look. I don't agree with what they expect us to look like, but they do know how to catch audiences attention. Whenever you see a picture of a beautiful woman on a magazine it gets your attention. So even though it isn't really moral, it is a strategy that sells, Beauty sells.

  4. The issue of body image has become a world wide issue. Not only in our society but others. This is an issue for both male and female. I believe that you should be able to always be yourself no matter your image and sadly in todays day and age that is not the case. Many girls are fighting to be "beautiful" when in reality they do not know that beauty comes from what's within not from the outside. Same with males. Body image should not be a reason for people to not live there lives happily. Today in America we see body image and self-esteem to be the possible cause, of depression, anxiety, and even suicide. This is not something our society should be proud of.

  5. This sucks having to watch because so many girls these days are so beautiful and a lot of them disagree because they are comparing themselves to models and other celebrities who are photoshopped. It's sad that most girls starting at such young ages are already concerned about how they look and are wanting to change things on their bodies. Our society should have us growing up into the beautiful person we were meant to be and no one should be ashamed of it. I think we are all unique in our own ways because otherwise life would be boring. This video does a great job of explaining how many people need help determining their beauty.

  6. Body image is a huge issue in today's society. Everyone wants to look like that forty year old celebrities who weigh 125 pounds and have huge boobs. That is just not possible. It is so sad on how our society is really pushing body image and because of that both males and female are being affected. I totally agree with this post and everyone should watch that video. Everyone is made differently and no one can change that. Taking all the drugs and becoming anorexia is just hurting your self more than anyone else. Teenagers today think they have to be skinny to get a good looking boy friend. This was a good video to help send a message to teenagers or any age because everyone is beautiful in their own special way. The media does not help because all the models are skinny, pretty, tan, muscular, have big boobs, and perfect skin. It is really sad to think over the years of my generation it has become and even bigger deal.
