talented players like Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto'o YayaToure who are the

my country Cameroon proud and he is the one who has made our country
famous today just by playing soccer. Some people use his name as a
reference point to know about Cameroon because I came across someone who
didnt know much about Cameroon but his first question was if I knew

Why UGGs Are So Ugly

WHY UGGS ARE SO UGLY
Brittney Lentsch

As this winter season is slowly ending and spring is coming up right around the corner, I think it is fair to say that this was once again another winter season filled with the most popular shoe brand in the Midwest for all types of women and some men. Want to take a guess? It’s called UGGs. UGGs get their material from sheep all around the world but mainly from Australia. The whole “UGG” frenzy started when Pamela Anderson wore them on her show Baywatch. She really liked her UGGs and later on began promoting them all around the country and advertising how it is safely made from sheep fur. Little did she know, she found out later on that in the process of making these boots, they contribute to a lot of animal cruelty. Our selfish need for the name brand “UGG” is financially supporting animal cruelty in that very way. Most of Americans are told that they just shave the fur off to make these boots. Most people also don’t know that in the process of shaving their fur off, they have to shave the skin of the sheep with it. When they get their skin shaved off, the moisture from inside of them attracts maggots and over time the sheep literally get eaten alive. The sheep don’t recieve any type of pain relieving medications or a humane way of removing their skin. The sheep get castrated, get their tails cut off, and their throats slit just for a trending shoe and a specific label. There are many types of different substitutes made similar to UGGs that you can get for a much less expensive price and that aren’t hurting millions of sheep each year. People are literally wearing skin on their feet on a daily basis and do not realize it. Next time you are walking down the hallway or the street in the winter time and see someone wearing a pair of UGGs, think to yourself, that is eight more sheep that just died for that pair of shoes. This is why I believe UGGs have an ugly reputation.

Budweiser Super Bowl

If you have watched the news about the Super Bowl lately you may wondering what's more important the actual game or the commercials. Every year Super Bowl commercials are something the viewers are excited about. As we know commercials are mostly advertisements for marketing. In all about thirty or more seconds they are trying to persuade you that their product is the best. They use many different techniques to persuade the viewers. Have you ever sat back and actually broke a commercial apart and wondered why they have every little detail in the commercial. For the past few years I have specifically observed the Super Bowl Budweiser commercials as it is known to be the Super Bowls most popular commercial. Here are the Super Bowl Budweiser commercials from 2013 and 2014. While watching these commercials think about how the message correlates with the product they are trying to sell.

Both of these commercials are very similar. I have many questions that come to mind while watching these. Yes they are very cute and emotional from the actions to the music. So what is the main point of Budweiser commercials? The main point should be to get people to buy Budweiser verse another brand. So do they really have to make a commercial for an alcohol beverage, emotional and close to home for some people? I think it’s a great marketing technique and it obviously works. But why do they have to relate cute puppies and Clydesdales horses and emotional music to alcohol? I see this trend in not only Budweiser commercials but many other commercials out there. If you have not thought about the breakdown of commercials before I hope this provoked you to do so. It is a very interesting topic of research and discussion.

Lone Survivor

Lone Survivor is a movie that come out on Christmas day telling the story for four young Navy Seals and their heroic actions they took on a mission against al-Qaeda. The story tells us about the men being ambushed in the mountains of Afghanistan by members of the Taliban and doing what they could to fight for their lives. The men overcame many odds and have the strength to fight to the finish though only one man would make it.

This movie is the best war movie that has come out in a long time. Though such a great movie it is sad that a tragedy like this had to happen for it to be made. I believe that this movie opened to eyes to many who have seen it and made us think differently about the things the brave men and women are doing for our freedom overseas. We don’t hear many of the things that happen over there and to hear the story of these men makes it hard to understand how anyone could disrespect the men and women who serve our great country.

I have many friends that after high school decided that fighting for our country was something that they believed was right for them. Though at first it was something I wasn’t sure about and had a hard time saying good bye to them I know understand their choice. I respect these friends more than any other friend because of the brave choices they are making. My friend is overseas at this moment on his first deployment in the heart of the fighting. Getting messages from him knowing he is safe is something many of us look forward to everyday.

For those of you who have not gone to see this movie yet should really take the time to go and see it! Support our Troops!
This is the trailer for the movie.

Supernatural Paper Airplanes

The limitless fascination we all find in our phones is immeasurable. New apps, accessories, etc. are being developed constantly keeping us connected and - nearly as important – keeping us entertained. A newer invention in development is the “Power Up 3.0” kit. With this kit (and the crafting of some paper) you can remotely control a paper airplane for around thirty dollars. Through a smartphone app a user can gyroscopically control a tiny prop and rudder to steer a mere piece of paper. Pilot and industrial designer Shai Goitein also had durability in mind when constructing his product; fear not. The Power Up 3.0 should withstand a few amateur aviator crash landings.
This intelligently designed prototype was backed through the site Kickstarter.com. Through the site an innovator can present a new idea or invention to the online world to plea for funding assistance (a kickstart) via crowdsourcing. Simultaneously the innovator tests the waters to get a feel for what people think about their idea. Inevitably, it is a sink or swim trial for their potential product. Much like stores want to know how efficiently their products will sell, an innovator would want to predict how successfully they can market their idea. I consider Kickstarter to be a great resource that provides possible resolution to some of the product marketability issues we have touched on in class. A successfully backed product would hopefully equate to continuing on to the mainstream world of sales.

Awkward.

Awkward is a popular TV show on MTV that is made for teens. In this show the main character, Jenna Hamilton lives through various different awkward moments that all high school kids could relate to. All the way from cheating on her boyfriend and Jenna's best friend dating Jenna's ex. Jenna goes through social suicide and rises back up by dealing with her problems and admitting her mistakes. While she loses everything she has she still fights to get it all back.

I first started watching this show this past summer because I was bored and surprisingly found it really entertaining. This show has its ups and downs but it also has its’ fair share of awkward moments and what would the show “Awkward” be without those moments? I would definitely recommend this show to high school and college kids because this show is accessible to their lives and it will not fail to make you laugh!

Defining the Decades

While channel surfing recently, I stumbled upon a particular Toyota commercial. Despite not being  interested in car ads (at all), this one caught my eye.  In it, the Toyota marketing team appears to want to show off their abilities to recreate the stereotypical past eras in American culture, including the groovy 70's and grunge 90's. Take a look:

They managed to fit 5 decades of culture into a 1 minuet ad.  Every era had very distinctive characteristics such as the style of dress and type of music, so they would easily be identifiable to viewers. And each decade was recognizable, except the “modern day” one. It seemed to be a little off.  According to the commercial, Dubstep is the current music trend. Does that sound right to you? I was a bit surprised by their choice, but maybe that what’s cool these days and I’m just hopelessly unaware. It's possible.  Then again, the commercial also had people throwing paper out windows, which is (luckily for recycling activists) not a common occurrence, so granted it’s probably not the most reliable source of what’s up.  It is after all, a commercial, not a documentary.
At the same time, that portrayal of modern-day life did make me wonder. If the marketing team at Toyota remade this commercial in 10 or even 20 years, how would they (or would they?) alter it? Will this set of years be represented with bright neon outfits and fluid dance moves, or teens clutching smart phones as French fries rain from the sky? It's up to us, the people of here and now, to determine what this decade will be remembered as. No pressure!

Richard Sherman, Hero or Villian?

2 weeks ago the NFC Championship game was played in Seattle.  It was decided on an interception in the end-zone with time running out.  Richard Sherman made a great play on the ball to swat the ball away into his teammates hands for the game winning interception.  After the game with emotions running high Sherman was interviewed by Erin Andrews.  In the interview he continued to talk trash about Michael Crabtree the receiver who he covered during the game.  This wasn't the first instance of Sherman getting into it with other people involve with football.  Earlier this season he had gotten into a confrontation with Tom Brady, told Skip Bayless, a sports journalist, that "I am better than you at life," and has consistently been involved in social media trash talking.

This causes many people to think that Sherman is a thug, arrogant, and over confident.  However few people really know his story or accomplishments.  Sherman was born and raised in Compton, California and was the salutatorian of his high school class. He then went on to Stanford University where he was an All-American in football, a standout track star, and earned his masters in communications.  On top of these accomplishments Sherman also has been known for being one of the most charitable players in the NFL.  He has contributed to and started numerous charities, done numerous things for veterans, and attended numerous community events.

With Sherman showing two different people on and off the field it makes many people question what type of person he is.  I think that Sherman ultimately is a good person, but I don't really like him due to the way he acts around football related issues.

What has society come to?

While scrolling through Facebook the other day, I came across an article on who the children of tomorrow are looking up to. Attached to the article was this photo. 6 well known bands/singers, stating what they have done for our nation in the past few years. We have Metallica, going to meet one of their fans who was 90 YEARS OLD, in a nursing home. Nirvana, making sure to treat their fans with the respect they deserve. Blink-182, showing respect for a fan that had passed away, and Green Day making sure a school has a prom they deserve. Four bands that do good in the world, and who the children should be looking up to.

As you read on you see two very familiar bands/singers. One Direction and Justin Bieber. One Direction was approached and asked if they would do a free concert for a "Make-A-Wish" patient. They refused. Justin Bieber whom so many young girls and boys look up to, has been in nothing but a downward spiral. From spitting on fans, vandalizing parks, disrespecting very influential people, and of course driving under the influence.

It seems as though the children are looking up to the completely wrong people. Nowadays the celebrities that children are looking up to are nothing but negative influences. The bands or singers that don't need to be the center of attention are doing right in our world. I don't believe that anyone would want our children to be looking up to the type of people who are self-centered and want nothing but money. Something needs to seriously change.

We Make TV

Just this past Monday marked the 200th episode of one of my favorite shows How I Met Your Mother on CBS. This achievement happened in the shows ninth and final season. Both achievements are impressive in their own rights, but why are they so impressive? I believe that has a lot to do with the fan base and how popular shows today can be.

Dizzy and disorientated: Sky is investigating its 3D technology to see if health advice is needed

Many shows that premiere nowadays start off with strong followings that eventually lead to more seasons to keep viewers entertained. Despite these successes, there seem to be more and more networks turning to new shows to boost their ratings. Why turn to something new when their other shows are showing progress? It all comes down to what the people want to see. Despite what some may think, we the people have more influence on the shows that are produced in TV today. Why? If the producers can't come up with something to keep us entertained, then their networks could cancel their shows, and if the shows are cancelled then the writers, producers, cast and crew of those shows are out of jobs. Nobody wants to lose their job just because someone isn't happy with what they produce.

Despite this constant looming presence of failure, networks keep producing shows left and right to try and find a new niche in TV to keep the masses happy and keep their jobs. Networks are trying to keep us focused on them, not what kind of content they release. Because without us, there wouldn't be TV.

Popular Culture and EDM

Popular culture is the ideas, perspectives, attitudes, and etc., which are within the mainstream of a culture. Popular culture is heavily influenced by mass media, generation’s, technology, music, etc., which affects everyday life of society.

A popular form of pop culture is music and one that is coming up the fastest right now or becoming more popular each day is EDM, also known as Electronic Dance Music. Some of you may be familiar with what I am talking about and may enjoy this topic and/or music; others may have no idea what I am talking about or hate EDM. Its alright, I’m not going to judge you but I may catch your attention a little bit.

EDM is becoming huge in the Twin Cities; artists are there almost every weekend, ranging from most popular names to small familiar names. Examples of a few past artists that have came to the Twin Cites are Steve Aoki, Zomboy, Flux Pavilion, Calvin Harris, Borgore, Dillon Francis, Rusko, etc, and a few that will be coming to the twin cites are Carnage, Boombox Cartel, Infected Mushroom, and Hardwell. These artists come to the cities to put on a show and when you go to their show they don’t just play music, they also have crazy visuals and lights. Most artists that come to the cities do not have their own visual production so the venue that booked the artist will hire us, Antic Studios. If you have gone to any of the above artists I just listed, you have seen what Antic Studio does. The visuals, the lights, the production, etc, that is all us, Antic Studios.
